Barroso: The EU´s austerity policies “have reached their limit”

22/04/2013 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durao Barroso, has admitted that the EU´s austerity policies to deal with the crisis “have reached their limit” because of a lack of political and social support among citizens and has confirmed that the Community Executive will “probably” relax the deficit objectives this year for several member countries.

“Even though I believe these policies are fundamentally correct, it seems to me that they have reached their limit because a policy, in order to be successful, not only needs to be designed correctly but also must have a minimum of political and public support”, said Barroso during a conference.

“Politically and socially, a policy that is only seen as austerity is not sustainable”, admitted the president of the Commission. In his opinion, there must be a combination between the “essential correction of the enormous deficit and debt levels” with short term growth measures because “some reforms take time for their effect to be produced.”

“What´s happening in Greece, Portugal and Spain is amazing in terms of the correction of external imbalances”, emphasized Barroso, who has backed “discussing the tempo” of the adjustments that the member countries have to make.

“The Commission has proposed an extension of the timeframe for the correction of the excessive deficits for several countries and we will probably do the same for others during the next evaluation”, the president of the Community Executive stated. «We´re now revising the timeframe through dialogue with the member countries», he explained.

Brussels is set to present its recommendations on the speed of the deficit corrections on the 29th of May. The Spanish government hopes the Community Executive will give it two more years, until 2016, to meet the 3% (debt) level of GDP and that it will relax the deficit objective for this year to 6%, instead of the current 4.5%.
