Brussels still “worried” about Spain´s electricity market reform but believes it could eliminate its tariff deficit

09/13/2014 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The European Commission is still “worried” and “watchful” over the impact of the electricity market reform passed by the Spanish government, but believes it has “the necessary potential” to eliminate the tariff deficit in 2014, according to Energy Commissioner, Günther Oettinger, in response to questioning in the Euro parliament by the MEP Ramón Tremosa (CiU).

“The Commission believes the reforms of the electric system adopted by Spain have the necessary potential to eliminate the tariff deficit in the electric energy sector by the end of 2014, although the exact impact of the reforms is still unclear and, therefore, the Commission, is still concerned and attentive,” declared Oettinger in a written statement.

During his questioning, Tremosa asked Oettinger if the evaluation on the Spanish energy reforms had been concluded yet and if he believed it would do enough to fix the tariff deficit. The MEP was also interested to know if the reforms were in line with the directive on energy efficiency and if Brussels feels the Spanish government had taken enough steps to do something about the problems with the electric energy.

“The analysis of the reforms made by Spain and their compatibility with the directive on energy efficiency has not concluded yet,” said the Energy Commissioner.
