Five key points to take advantage of the lower interest rates from the ECB

09/05/2014 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

When Mario Draghi announced last Thursday that the ECB would lower interest rates to 0.05%, their lowest ever, the economic consequences showed up immediately.

The European Financial Planners Association (EFPA) has analyzed how lower interest rates can affect a normal person with savings, and has provided some keys to investment in light of the current situation.

1. The ECB has lowered interest rates again down to 0.05%, a historical minimum, with the objective of making credit cheaper so that people and businesses can find more financing and has also lowered the interest rate that applies to the deposit facility down to -0.2% from -0.1%.

2. The decision can lead to a competitive advantage for Spanish businesses with activities abroad due to a possible devaluation of the euro compared to the dollar, which would allow for an increase in exports that have become stagnant over the last few months.

3. Everyone who has a mortgage under contract that´s works in function of the euribor will be benefited a reduction in their monthly payments.

4. Lower rates will affect the rate of return of the most conservative assets, such as bank deposits. In the current scenario, the options you have to try to grab a highly sought after return include assuming some risk, while always considering there are no perfect financial products and this depends on investment profile of each investor and understanding we should never invest in something we don´t understand.

5. Investment funds are an interesting alternative and are accessible for all types of profiles thanks to their wide range of offers, tax advantages, high levels of liquidity and by offering a wide diversification of investment assets.

Equities are another option but we shouldn´t forget these assets are not within everyone´s reach and can carry a high amount of risk. Although the stock market expectations for the upcoming months, in light of the decisions made by the ECB, are looking bright.
