10. Resalta tus ganas de aprender y trabajar.

11. Muéstrate receptivo.

12. Explícate bien y sé coherente en tus respuestas.

13. No interrumpas en exceso al entrevistador.

14. No mientas nunca. Mejor limítate a resaltar tus puntos fuertes.

The keys to having your first job interview be a success

10/17/2014 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

One of the challenges we have to face when we get older is to start looking for a job and, along with that, the interviews to get the job. It´s a situation that we haven´t been prepared for throughout our lives and it is the most important moment, and for many the most stressful, in the whole job search process from when we send our résumé until we get that phone call we´ve been waiting for.

Given that finding a job today in our country (Spain) is not easy, we should go in well prepared to face the interview we´ve been waiting so long for make sure our profile comes out on top of the rest of the candidates.

Even though it´s reasonable to think that you´ll commit some type of error during the interview, it´s important that we take advantage of this opportunity so your résumé doesn´t end up on the reject list of the selection process.

Communication and Human Resources manager Janire Cifuentes of Jobandtalent and regional director of Adecco Selection Marisol Cotal, are here to give you the keys and some fundamental advice on how to leave the best impression on the recruiter and how to make the job yours.

1. Prepare for the interview beforehand. This will help you organize your ideas and make you seem surer of yourself.

2. Find out about the company you´re going to interview with. It´s important to know what they do, what their products are and their strengths compared to the competition.

3. Say what you value and like most about the company.

4. Take into account the type of company you´re trying to get into. Act in a more formal or informal manner depending on the professional environment.

5. Dress yourself in accordance with the business´ environment. If the interview is for a consulting position, you need to go accordingly; with a suit or formal dress. On the other hand, if the vacancy is in a start-up, your outfit can be less serious, but without going over the limits of being informal.

6. In the face-to-face with the recruiter, highlight your skills. But don´t go too far. To the interviewer, you shouldn´t seem like you know how to do everything on the first day. This will produce the opposite effect and you´ll create mistrust.

7. Control the non-verbal communication. Make eye contact.

8. Show calmness and security.

9. Keep a positive and optimistic attitude. Companies take these values in to account when interview young students or recent graduates.

10. Talk about your willingness to learn and work.

11. Be receptive.

12. Explain yourself well and be coherent in your answers.

13. Do not excessively interrupt the interviewer.

14. Never lie. If they notice, you´ll lose any chance you had. It´s better to limit yourself to highlighting your strong points.

What kind of questions will they ask me?
During a job interview, you can face all sorts of questions. There are some that you would even expect, like these ones that recruiters from an American event planning company: “If you could sing a song on American Idol, what would it be?” or Google´s interest in knowing, “How many basketballs would fit in this room?”.

You never know what they´ll surprise you with in an interview, but it´s more than likely that questions about you academic training won´t be missing, such as “What class did you like the best and why?”. It´s also possible that they´d ask you about what your interests are and in what and where you see yourself working in a few years.

To be coherent and to give the right answers, follow these pieces of advice:

– Act normally when facing a question you didn´t expect.

– You can even recognize the fact that you weren´t expecting it and ask for a few seconds to think about it.

– Don´t try to divert their attentions and avoid answering with topics that don´t correspond to the question.

– It´s advisable not to carry on too much when answering. The length of the question will set the length of the answer.

– Stay on track with the important parts of the question the recruiter asks you. Evaluate if the person is satisfied with the answer given.

– You can ask the interviewer questions that show your interest in involving yourself in the Project: “What could I bring to the company?”.

– The best moment to ask questions is at the end of the interview.

– Never ask a question in a job interview about the working hours you´re going to have or about how much you´re going to earn.
