Cómo comprar online de forma segura

26/11/2014 | Europa Press – Europa Press Español

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Navidades, Reyes…

How to shop safely online

11/26/2014 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

Black Friday, Cyber Monday, Christmas, Epiphany… These important dates are right around the corner and with them comes the following question: What should I buy? Sometimes the perfect present is hard to find: running around, your personal budget, availability… This has led to it being more and more common to use the internet to make these purchases.

Buying online has little by little become a real option for Spanish shoppers. In fact, online shopping compliments the physical kind, according to the Barometer on Christmas shopping 2015 from Vente-Privee.com.

In reality, more than half of Spaniards (54%) have said they look for deals online to find the best discounts and 53% take advantage of opportunities on pre-purchases because it allows them to get the best presents at the lowest prices in order to optimize their budgets.

But there is mistrust when buying online. And one of the main reasons people don´t buy online is because of safety, which is to say the lack of it.

In this article we give you some pointers so that your online shopping experience is a bit safer.

1. Buy on well-known websites
We´ve all seen adds on the web for miracle treatments, impossible deals, trips at almost no cost When you buy on the Internet, just like out in the real world, you have to use your common sense. If we´re not 100% sure about a deal or a web page, it´s better not to go in.

If it´s the first time you´re buying online, it´s better to go to well-known web pages, those that your family or friends recommend you or, simply consult the web pages of the actual shops that you already know from your everyday shopping.

2. Verify the reputation of the shop
Once you´ve chosen a shop and if you´re still wary, we can check out opinions about the experiences of other customers online. There are numerous forums that you can consult about how othe
r online shoppers have fared.
Just search for “buy *name of the company* opinions” on Google and the information you´re looking for will come up.

3. Read the web page´s privacy policy
This step is usually not take but it can be quite useful. Online shopping pages usually have a tab where they display their privacy policy, which means they say what they do with the data users provide during an online transaction. To make sure it´s safe, it´s really important that the page says it will not use your data with third parties without your consent.

4. Look for HTTPS://
If you’ve never bought anything online, you might ask yourself what are all those letters in the web direction because they are crucial for secure online shopping. The Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure is an application protocol used for the secure transfer of data, which is to say the securest way to navigate online.

When you type in your purchase details, always make sure that the beginning of the URL you´re using begins with HTTPS://

5. Only provide the necessary data
To shop online you don´t need to tell your life story to the company. In reality, all you need to provide is you name, postal address, birthday (if you have to prove you´re of age) and the payment details. If they ask for more information than that, you should be suspicious and look for another web page.

6. Use secure networks and terminals
Nobody´s interested in your banking information so make sure you make your purchases on a secure network, which means not buying online from an open WiFi network and avoid using public computers at libraries or universities because you could be susceptible to data hacking. Make sure you always use your own network or one with security measures in order to avoid complications.
