The ECB will maintain the “open bar” of liquidity at least until July, 2014

05/02/2013 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The European Central Bank (ECB) will maintain measures to provide unlimited liquidity to European banks for however long is needed and at least until July of 2014, according to the announcement made by European Central Bank president Mario Draghi.

Therefore, the Italian banker said the Eurozone banks will see their demands met for liquidity at a fixed rate and without allocation limits at least until July of 2014 during a press conference following a meeting of the ECB Governing Council, which lowered interest rates by a quarter point down to a historic minimum of 0.50%.

“The combination of both measures constitutes something very important”, affirmed Draghi when referring to the decision to maintain the ECB´s “open bar” of liquidity and to cutting the interest rates, which in his opinion will end the possibility of financial entities alleging they have problem
s accessing liquidity and not proving credit.

So the person in charge of the Eurozone´s monetary policy has expressed his confidence in the fact the decisions approved on Thursday will serve as a support for the economic recuperation of the Eurozone by the end of the year.

“Our accomodative policies will remain in place as long as is necessary”, said Draghi, who pointed out that the bank has started to make inquiries about the securitizations (Asset-Backed Securities) accepted as collateral by the institution.
