The Euro leaders green lights the reforms proposed by Greece to extend their bailout

02/24/2015 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The Economy and Finance ministers of the Eurozone have given the go-ahead on the list of reformed proposed by the new Greek government to extend Greece´s bailout that´s set to expire on the 28th of February until the end of June.

“We´ve agreed to begin the procedures at home looking towards a final decision on the extension of the current agreement for up to four months”, the brief statement declared that was published by the Euro leaders at the end of the teleconference meeting that was held.

Furthermore, the ministers asked the Greek authorities “to keep working on and amplify” this list of reforms in order to work in “close coordination” among the institutions given the current agreement´s framework and to advance “quickly and successfully” towards the final review.

The Euro leaders looked over the Greek promises after receiving a preliminary go-ahead on the document by the institutions that Greece was negotiating the bailout with, known until now as the “troika”: the European Commission, the European Central Bank and the International Monetary Fund.

Before the start of the meeting, Brussels had already made public that it considered the text sent out by Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis to be a “valid starting point” for the agreement.

This is the first list of steps the Greek government will have to “specify more and agree upon” with those institutions from now until the end of the month of April, said the Euro leaders in a statement.

The Finnish finance minister, Peter Kazimir, announced the agreement on his Twitter account but warned that Greece still had a lot of “hard work” ahead of them from now until the end of April. “Now we want to see the numbers,” he added.

Following the Euro leaders´ decision to give the green light to the bailout extension until the end of June, the national parliaments that need to ratify this decision “can now start”, said the Eurozone Executive vice president, Valdis Dombrovskis.

The President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz of Germany, was one of the first to evaluate the agreement and said the reforms agreed upon offered a “good equilibrium”. “Now the (Greek) government have to step up and implement the promises within the reform,” he added in a comment on Twitter.
