The IMF declares that the Spanish banking systems is one of the strongest in Europe

28/02/2013 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The Spanish banking system is among “the strongest” in Europe, according to the opinion of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) given at a press conference by deputy spokesperson William Murray.

“The Spanish banking system is one of the strongest in Europe”, reaffirmed Murray when questioned about the possible impact that the 19.193 billion euros in losses declared this Thursday by Bankia could have on (the banking system´s) stability.

“When we make our evaluations about a country´s banking system we don´t just examine one specific entity, we look at the entire system itself”, explained the spokesperson of the international institution.

The experts at the IMF, that visited Spain for the second time at the end of January in order to supervise the application of the bailout plans for the financial sector, emphasised the “great progress” in the application of the banking reforms when they had finished their evaluation, although they warned of the persistence of risks in the Spanish economy and, therefore, for the country´s financial sector.

Also, in reference to the recent elections in Italy, the representative of the IMF expressed the need for all countries to maintain their efforts to fix their budgets at a rhythm that allows them to be kept up to date.

“Italy is an example; in the last few years, it has made significant progress”, stated Murray without going into the possible instability that could be derived from the election results.
