The Cuban Government to start monetary unification in order to improve the economy

10/22/2013 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The Cuban Government announced on Tuesday that it will begin the unification of its currency, ending the convertible peso that has been in place for the last 19 years. Although specific dates were not mentioned, the first changes will be made in businesses with the objective of improving not only their efficiency but also helping to stimulate sectors that produce goods and services.

In an article from the State newspaper “Granma”, the island´s government announced the end of the convertible peso and added that even though this is not “a measure that will resolve all the current economic problems by itself”, it is “necessary to guarantee the reestablishment of the value of the Cuban peso and its functions as a currency.”

The new monetary policy, announced several months ago by President Raúl Castro, is a “complex process, rigorously prepared and executed”, which will begin with “a legal framework preparation period” while also training the personnel who will be in charge of future transformations.

The article also highlighted the fact that the monetary unification will not put Cubans´ savings in local banks at risk, for those in both types of pesos that currently exist as well as in foreign currencies, nor will it change the subsidies for low prices. “Just like throughout the Cuban Revolution, no measure adopted in the monetary field will hurt people who legally obtain their earnings”.

Starting in 1994, two types of currency were circulating in Cuba: the Cuban peso (CUP), which is used to pay public employees and with which some goods and basic services can be purchased; and the Cuban convertible peso (CUC), pegged to the American dollar, which is used to pay for imported products and tourism services.

The double currency system is harmful to a part of the Cuba population, especially for those paid in Cuban pesos since some products, like tooth paste or cooking oil, must be paid in convertible pesos, a currency that´s 25 times stronger.
