The value of stock market IPOs was reduced by almost 100% in 2012

03/12/2013 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The number of initial public offerings (IPOs) on the Spanish trading market was reduced by 44% in 2012, going from nine down to five offerings, while their value was reduced from 6.083 billion euors to 9 million euros, which represents a collapse of 99.8% during 2012 when compared to the previous year.

These findings come from an IPO Watch Europe report developed by PwC corresponding to 2012 that shows that these numbers confirm the continuing economic uncertainty in Spain and the impact on investors´ confidence which has been “damaged even more because of the Bankia´s bailout by the Government less a year after its entry in the stock market”.

Accordingly, the director of the capital markets Group of PwC, Vicente García, says he´s confident, with a tempered optimism towards the market, that the positive trend of the last quarter of 2012 will transfer “to the Spanish market every time that economic indicators show positive signs”.

IPOs IN EUROPE FALL 40%
As for Europe, the number of public offerings fell last year, going from 430 to 263 offerings, while their value fell 60% from 26.5 to 10.9 billion euros in the same period, which indicated “one of the worst years since the start of the financial crisis” in 2008.

According to the IPO Watch Europe written by PwC in 2012, when these numbers are compared to the previous year, the study found a drop in the number of operations -167 less- as well as in the value -15.6 billion euros less-.

However, the report stresses that, in spite of the numbers, the European market “appears optimistic”. It stated that the last quarter of 2012 “was the most active”, in relation to previous periods, since eight out of the ten IPOs were done so in the last three months. The report says that PwC believes this “upward trend will continue” in 2013.

MEGAFON, THE LARGEST PUBLIC OFFERING
MegaFon, the second biggest mobile phone service provider and the fourth biggest telecommunications provider in Russia, had the largest public offering in 2012 reaching 1.288 billion euros. However, the report clarified that this IPO only would have reached the f
ifth position in the top-10 in Europe during 2011.

On the other hand, Telefónica Deutschland made an initial public offering getting 1.260 billion euros, coming in second place on the list. The third most important deal of the year was for the Direct Line Insurance Group, which went public on the London market hitting 976 million euros.

LONDON, THE MOST IMPORTANT STOCK MARKET
In terms of economic sectors, telecommunications was a standout with approximately 35% of the total funds. Also, the insurance sector got a significant boost with the Direct Line public offering in London and Talanx in Germany. Meanwhile, the financial sector registered an important decline, reporting 3.9 billion euros less, largely due to the two Spanish banks´ stock market entries in 2011, Bankia and Banca Cívica.

Lastly, the report indicates that the London stock market continues to be the largest in Europe, reaching a total value of 5.1 billion euros. What´s more, the United Kingdom registered three of the largest operations realised in Europe during 2012.
