In 2020 Spain will lack 1.9 million highly qualified workers

29/04/2013 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

Spain will lack 1.9 million highly qualified workers in the year 2020 due to quantitative imbalances (more jobs than workers) or qualitative disparities (business demand won´t match job seekers´ skills), according to a report published by Randstad on Monday.

According to the report, by 2020 there will have been 4 million jobs created that will require high-level qualifications, 2.1 million talented young people will finish their studies and enter the job market, and 500,000 qualified workers will come out of unemployment. At the same time, 540,000 workers are to retire.

The conclusion is that in 2020 there will be almost 2 million high-level qualification jobs will not be covered due to the existence of certain imbalances.

On one side there will be more workers available for jobs in certain sectors and on the other side there will be scarcity in other sectors.

Specifically, Randstad has calculated that in the manufacturing industry there will be 753,000 extra workers and 286,000 extra in construction. Contrarily, there will be a lack of 400,00
0 workers in commerce and 210,000 in business services.
The reports states that, over time, the jobs will adjust to the amount of available workers.

The report also shows that in the U.S. as well as in Europe, two out of every five workers do not have adequate training for their position. “Over qualification” is more common in the U.S. than in the EU, while “under qualification” is more common in the EU than in the U.S.

In almost every region in the world there will be a need for workers in 2020, the opposite of what is happening now with more people willing to work than there are jobs available, with the exception of the U.S., Germany, Austria and Holland. Ranstad calculates that in 2050 there will be 35 million unoccupied jobs in the EU.
