Spain drops five places on the Business Freedom index

01/23/2014 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

Spain is number 39 in a total of 178 countries on the 2014 Business Freedom index made by the Heritage Foundation, in comparison to the 34th place it held last year, even though it maintained itself within the moderately-free group of countries.

The worldwide ranking of the 2014 Index of Economic Freedom is topped by Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia and Switzerland in the first four spots, according to information from the Instituto de Estudios Económicos (IEE).

Spain´s drop in the ranking means that Spanish businesses are coming up against «more barriers» and, therefore, have less freedom to carry out their activities than other countries.

According to the Heritage Foundation´s report, starting a business in Spain means going through 10 procedures and takes around three weeks, but compliance with requirements to obtain a license takes more than seven months.

Among the ten economic freedoms that are analyzed to make the global index is business freedom. The Heritage Foundation report says that many countries have made steps forward in the modernization and rationalization of their business models, although there are still noticeable differences in the regulatory efficiency that surrounds business activities, which influences the necessary procedures to start a company or obtain a license.

The international business freedom ranking is led by Hong Kong, followed in 7th place by Finland and the U.K. in 9th. Sweden, Belgium, Germany and Holland are among the top 20, while Lithuania, Slovenia, Portugal, Ireland and Latvia are placed in the top 30.

Furthermore, France, Cyprus and Hungary are placed 33rd, 34th and 35th. Slightly behind Spain come Austria (41), Greece (45) and Italy (47). At the bottom of the ranking, Slovakia (88), Malta (102) and Croatia (107) can be found.
