Espirito Santo, in the eye of the hurricane

07/13/2014 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The Spanish stock market hasn´t be able to withstand the turbulence in European banking. Not only are there suspicions about the financial health of Espirito Santo of Portugal but problems are looming over some German and French financial entities, but for differing reasons. Fines and worse-than-expected results are at the center of everyone´s attention. Aviation companies haven´t helped either. The problem is that the IBEX has had its streak broken and lost several supports. That being said, it did maintain 10,500 points in spite of dropping 4.27 percent over five sessions, about half of what it had earned this year up until now.

Many analysts are seeing this correction as something healthy and that it was necessary for the IBEX to take a step back in order to gain some steam. The question is how long it´s going to last. There is not much trading volume in the summer and the statistics speak for themselves about market behavior during these months. There have been big winners and some big losers too. So we´ll have to wait for some real data. In any case, expectations are good for the end of the year. The consensus insists the Spanish index could reach and even surpass 12,000 points.

What has come out this week is a flood of positive reports in the evolution of the Spanish economy. And it´s not precisely the Spanish Government that´s the most optimistic. The IMF as well as JP Morgan or the Bank of Spain have substantially increased their forecasts about the increase of Spanish GDP for this year and the next. Other measures have been passed, without parliamentary commotion, which will let many different groups take part in the bonanza; around 11 billion will go towards young people, the long-term unemployed, the self-employed and small businesses. In general, they are steps that will benefit many and will help to increase growth and employment.
