Google wants to revolutionize commercials on TV

03/21/2015 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The guys from Mountain View revolutionized the online publicity market and now they have their sights set on the television market. By using Google Fiber they´re going to try to use the same model they used for their search engine but adapting it to the characteristics of television.

Publicity on TV has barely changed at all since the start of this type of media a half century ago. Without going into detail about the effectiveness of type of publicity, the truth is that a lot of times the person watching TV watches a commercial they´re not interested in. That means the potential consumer of the product is not receiving the publicity.

Google wants to change this, just like is di don the Internet. For those of you who haven´t notices, the searches we do on Google influence the publicity we receive later online. The question is: how can this crossover to TV?

The guys from Mountain View have started to track the commercials that are shown on TV in Kansas, where Google Fiber is already available. The device that provides the TV service will keep track of the programs and commercials watched by users.

Therefore, the publicity that´s shown to viewers will be much more directed and will show them things they´re actually interested in. In Google´s words: “If you´re a small business in Kansas, just like with online adds you´ll only have to pay for the adds that were seen, and you can limit the number of time the add is shown on a specific television.

Although that gives way to a new business model and a much more user-friendly television experience, it could have devastating consequences for today´s television companies. Google would offer these spots at a much lower price than the American channels or networks could, and it also would be a much more effective publicity system.

This play from the guys at Mountain View could spell disaster for TV companies, but it would be tremendously profitable for Google, which seems bent on knowing all our data.
