12/13/2013 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The Irish Government officially announced on Friday that Ireland “has successfully completed” is assistance program created by other eurozone members and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), making it the first eurozone country to confirm its completion of an international bailout.

“This isn´t the end of the road. This is a very significant milestone on the road, but we can´t go mad again,» declared Minister of Finance Michael Noonan at a press conference where he spoke of the necessity to maintain “the same types of policies”.

Along these lines, the Irish minister added that the merit if this success belongs to the Irish people, who have shouldered the impact of the adjustment measures and tax increases.

Also, the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin, acknowledged that, at times, the Government had concerns about the success of the bailout program.

«We have much greater control of our own destiny into the future and that is a huge testament to the fortitude and forbearance of the people of Ireland, who understood that a job had to be done to put things right for themselves and for their children.»

Ireland, which during the years of the economic expansion became known as the “Celtic Tiger”, received assistance to the tune of 85 billion euros from the EU and the IMF in 2010.

Barroso celebrates Ireland´s success
Also, the President of the European Commission, José Manuel Durao Barroso, congratulated the government and the Irish citizens for having left the bailout behind and stressed the “solidarity” and the “significant financial support” provided to Dublin by the rest of the member States.

“Thanks to their efforts and sacrifices, Ireland can now finance itself using its own ways and means,” said Barroso. “Ireland´s success sends an important message: that with determination and the support of the member States we can come out on top and we will come out even stronger from this deep crisis,” he stated.
