John Nash, a beautiful mind dedicated to mathematics

05/24/2015 | Notimérica – Europa Press English

The winner of the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economics, the mathematician John Forbes Nash Jr., has died along with his wife Alicia (82) at the age of 86 in a traffic accident when the taxi they were riding in crashed in New Jersey.

Nash had dedicated his whole life to mathematics. He was a specialist in game theory, differential geometry and partial derivative equations. All that helped him face his long-term disease, schizophrenia.

From when he was little, he was noticeably a loner and didn´t play much with other children. That made him throughout his life a bit of an egocentric person, incapable of understanding others whom he never considered to be his equal.

However, his findings have been applied in several fields such as biology, economics and even in military strategy. His greatest finding was the equilibrium that bears his name, which is a concept in game theory in which every individual applies the best strategy possible meaning that no one would have the motivation to change it.

In 1957 he married a student of his at MIT, Alicia Lardé from El Salvador. After one year of marriage, Nash was diagnosed with schizophrenia and was put away several time in psychiatric centers in New Jersey because he was having hallucinations.

Finally, using the theory that “every problem has a solution”, he decided to solve his psychiatric problem on his own, learning to live with this hallucinations and completely ignoring them with the help of his wife. The couple contributed to many different caused to know bring awareness about the disease.

Nash won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1994 for his contributions on game theory together with Reinhard Selten and John Harsanyi. Also, this past March Nash had just received the Abel Prize from the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

The journalist and professor at the University of Columbia Sylvia Nasar published the novel A Beautiful Mind in 1999, which was made into a movie starring Russell Crowe. The film, based on the life of the mathematician, won four Oscars, including the one for Best Picture.

According to Nash, the film “has errors and takes liberties, even in where it was shot; for example, it wasn´t shot in Princeton where I studies, even though a building appears as if it were Princeton”. However, Nash did recognize that “the positive thing was it knew how to call attention around the world about schizophrenia”.
