Gender equality affects productivity

10/02/2014 | Notimérica – Europa Press English

The General Secretary of Ibero-America (SEGIB), Rebeca Grynspan, has said that gender equality is also related to productivity and to “looking for better solutions for men and women because “integrating society means it´s necessary to integrate men”.

Grynspan made special mention of the enormous advances in terms of gender equality, “especially in Latin America”, when speaking before the XXV Plenary Assembly of Latin American Business Council (CEAL) in Madrid, Spain, which is a network of business owners and presidents of companies that look to build bridges and new alliances between Latin America and Spain.

Grynspan said it was “fundamental that women can opt for the kind of life we want to lead”, which means that “certain degrees of freedom are necessary” while stressing that every businesswoman “has had to go up against obstacles”.

For her part, the executive vice president and chief of operations at the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), Julie Katzman, said the key to success is the same as always: “Work hard, stay focused and get lucky” since “luck is always a factor, without a doubt”.

Over the last few years, quality “has deteriorated”, poverty levels have risen and “almost no country is the same than before the crisis,” Katzman added. For the IDB vice president, the real question is “what do we do” and among the possible answers is gender equality.

Looking at recent data, companies that favor equity between men and women are more productive: “More productivity is more inclusion”, declared Katzman. The “post-financial crisis world shows that with more women, almost everything works better”. The result is an increase in the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and “these big number are what make a different, change live and move countries”.

Regulations “condemn women”
Businesswoman and president of the Círculo de Empresarios”, Mónica de Oriol, said that “in Spain, we educate boys the same as g
irls”
and what´s surprising is “by having equal opportunities, there´s not equality in where they end up” since women cannot access management positions with the same ease. Furthermore, she believes that women have to meet low expectations: “When they expect little of you, it´s easy for us to surprise them.”

In reference to current legislation, she criticized the fact that “regulations, instead of favoring women, are actually condemning them”. “If a women gets pregnant and can´t be fired during the next eleven years after having her child, who do you think a company will hire”, she asked. In her opinion, women have to be tied to daily productivity measures, being the variable that most influences motivation.

“I´d prefer a women older than 45 or younger than 25, because what can we do with the problem of those in between?” added De Oriol. Additionally, the business women said that for women to reach top management positions, more regulation isn´t necessary just “the understanding that management positions require sacrifices”.

The president of the Spanish company Eulen, María José Álvarez, said having an “education to be able to choose” is necessary, that it´s important for “women to be conscious of the decisions they make because those decisions that affect them are not just privileges but are also responsibilities” and that “professionally, men and women are complimentary”.

The Secretary of State of Communications, Carmen Martínez de Castro, said the main challenge is conciliation: “We cannot have real equality if there are not measures in place that favor not having to choose”. “Equality is a question of justice, development and a necessity for the future,” concluded Martínez de Castro.
