Hirings show that the economy still needs help from the Fed

06/07/2013 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

U.S. employers stepped up hiring slightly in May, a sign that the economy is growing again modestly, but not enough to convince the Federal Reserve that is should reduce the amount of cash it´s injecting into the banking system.

There were 170,000 employees hired last month while the unemployment rate stayed steady but still high at 7.5%, according to a Reuters´ survey of economists.

After last winter the economy seemed to have turned a new corner and May would be the third consecutive month in which job contracts, excluding the agriculture sector, increased by less than 200,000. “The labor market might not be as solid as we thought,” said Kevin Cummins, a UBS economist in Stamford, Connecticut.

The report could increase worries over the fact that the austerity measures announced by the government for this year are chipping away at the economy´s strengths and are discouraging speculation over that fact that the Fed will soon cut back its bond buying program formulated to lower interest rates and encourage employment.
