American banks get prepared for a possible UK exit from the EU

American banks are designing preliminary plans to move some of their activities in London over to Ireland in light of worries created by the possibility that the United Kingdom leaves the European Union, according to the Financial Times.

Sources close to Bank of America, Citigroup and Morgan Stanley told the British newspaper that they are considering Ireland as a favorable destination for some of their European business in case it´s necessary to pull out of London.

The sources insist that, in the majority of the cases, these plans are in “very initial” stages, although one of the banks confirmed it´s already looking into moving some of its activities to Ireland.

Specifically, they are starting to get ready for the upcoming banking union in the Eurozone, which threatens to isolate the United Kingdom and, in the end, could make the country leave the European Union, something that´s being called a “Brexit”.

“Frankly, I´m looking at moving some activities to Ireland,” declared a UK division director of a Wall Street Bank, who added that the ECB and Irish government would welcome this decision. “This isn´t a Brexit so much as a legal optimization,” he added.

Currently, the majority of Asian and American banks have their EU operations based in the UK, giving them an automatic passport to the 28 member States. However, being able to maintain easy access to the rest of the EU from London is unlikely if the UK leaves the union.

According to the FT, the directors of the American banking entities are reluctant to talk in public about this because of fear of bothering the British regulators, but in private they say they aren´t really concerned about this.

The bank executive are fearful of a divide opening between the United Kingdom and the rest of the European financial system when the European Central Bank becomes in charge of the big banks in the Eurozone at the end of the year, when experts say that Frankfurt and Paris would become the new headquarters for these banks´ European operations.

However, Ireland presents itself as an attractive option for the American banks because of the low corporate taxes, English being its first language, a similar legal system to the British one and since it still belongs to the Eurozone.
