German investors to provide capital to Spanish SMEs

29/04/2013 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The (Spanish) Minister of Economy and Competitiveness, Luis de Guindos, and the German Minister of Finance, Wolfgang Schäuble, have reached a
n agreement
to create incentives so that German investors provide capital to solvent Spanish SMEs in order to reduce unemployment, especially among young people.

During the press conference after the meeting between two ministers at the events organized by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Loja (Granada), De Guindos announced that during the reunion the possibility to establish a “sponsorship and financial support plan” by both the German and Spanish governments was discussed.

“What is going to be encouraged is sponsorship to create financial support so that there are private investors that invest in the capital of these small and medium sized enterprises that are competitive and have the capacity to create jobs”, he said, while adding that “here is where we have to act because the SMEs are the ones that create jobs, especially for young people”.

Furthermore, the Spanish economic minister announced that the objective is to have the project ready “in a very short time”, by the end of May, if possible. To do this, a project leader was designated on each side to begin coordination right away.

Encouragement to extended this to other countries
“We know with certainty that at the moment there is a labor problem in Spain and, in spite of this, there is an enormous amount of competitive businesses that we have to open up and look for investment formulas so they can increase their capitalization”, he added.

“What is not talked about enough is that these businesses also need capital, which is not really a credit problem but whether they are well capitalized because if that´s the case, the costs of accessing credit are reduced and the conditions are improved”. “This is the base of the agreement”, he indicated.

Finally, De Guindos said at length that this agreement “is another sign” of the collaboration between Spain and Germany, and is confident that the agreement reached “can be extended to other countries”. He affirmed that “there already is interest from investors in Germany, in Spain and in the rest of the world”.

Meanwhile, the German Finance minister also indicated that both governments will try to take steps so that this investment model can start “right away”, and that it won´t just be a “exclusive club” in which Spain and Germany are going to participate, but “the rest (of the EU members) are invited to participate in this new project so that the benefits can reach all parts of Europe”.
