Merkel: The Eurozone countries should be prepared to give up national sovereignty

22/04/2013 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

The German chancellor, Angela Merkel, has said that the members of the Eurozone should be prepared to hand over control of certain political areas to European institutions if the block really wants to get over its debt crisis and bring back international investors.

In an event organized by Deutsche Bank in Berlin, in which Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also participated, Merkel emphasized that it seems that Europeans are able to find common solutions when they are “on the edge of the abyss”, but as soon as the pressure is taken off, “they say they want to follow their own path”.

“We have to be prepared to accept that Europe has the last word in certain areas. If we don´t, we will not be able to continue to build Europe”, warned the chancellor.

With respect to this, Tusk cautioned that it would be “dangerous” if other countries felt that Germany was pressing its economic model on the rest of the block, something that was denied by Merkel, who stated that Europe was made from different cultures and economies of different strength.

In her opinion, the crucial point was that Europe was oriented towards good practices, which means that Germany accepted the Single Market for Services, a common labor market and a more compatible Social Security system so that Europeans could move from one country to another with having to worry about their pensions.

“It´s not always necessary to abandon national practices, but we need them to be compatible. This is chaos right now”, stressed Merkel, who insisted that (everyone) needs to be prepared “to break with the old in order to make progress forward”. “I´m ready to do it”, she said.

Also, Merkel defended her position on overcoming the crisis from critics that accuse the chancellor of putting too much emphasis on austerity, and stated that Europe should follow a path that generates growth and financial stability at the same time.
