Do you know how to save and “buy” your retirement?

09/17/2014 | Notimérica – Europa Press English

Life expectancy has been increasing, which means that many are living in retirement for 10, 20 or even 30 years with a much higher activity level, along with many more options for leisure. This makes saving and having a retirement plan extremely important. So, do you know what rules you should follow to retire without having to look at your wallet?

The U.S. Department of Labor says that just 54 percent of all American workers have a retirement plan, compared to 38 percent of Latin American workers, something that you should be prepared for “starting in your youth.”

You h
ave to think about retirement as a necessary and “expensive product”, something you buy the same as other significant purchases.
Also, the Department stresses that it´s important to get organized whether your country or employer offer you a retirement plan or not.

Become economically secure
In times of crisis, the idea of economic security seems farfetched, but it´s actually when it´s most important to get organized and save. The best option is to start planning for retirement and stick to that plan. Furthermore, the U.S. Department of Labor says you should “save and invest” and not “put money away under your mattress”.

The challenge is not just saving but learning to invest. Having some knowledge about savings plans and investment principles is key for growing your savings. In general terms, a comfortable retirement requires: a type of social security, a retirement plan and personal savings and investments.

Meeting your savings goals
First of all, it´s necessary to think about retirement and imagine it. The next step is to formulate a retirement plan in which you´ve included the goals you´ve imagined. Then, write down the steps to achieve those objectives, the amount of real savings you have and how much sacrifice you can make in order to reach your goals, which will allow you to separate your realistic goals from the unnecessary ones.

To make a savings plan you have to, firstly, calculate your net present value: what you actually have (assets) and what you owe (liabilities), and study that net value each year so it´s able to grow. Also, you have to identify which financial resources you have, and even ones you don´t have yet, like insurance for becoming incapacitated, in case you end up alone.

Ensure your economic future
After setting your retirement goals, you have to make decisions based upon what your future needs will be, which means calculating how much savings you´ll need for retirement and how much that would be month after month.

An easy rule to follow it calculating 80 percent of your income to see what your yearly retirement “cost” will end up being. That means calculating how much yearly income you have, after taxes, in order to know the amounts that´s necessary to maintain your desired life style, taking into account how much money you´ll get every month from a pension, in those countries where social security does exist.

Also, you have to consider how many years you´re going to live retired: the probability that you´ll live at least another 20 years from someone who retires at 55 is pretty high – around 66 percent of men and close to 76 percent of women. Women, on average live five years longer than men.

Protecting yourself from financial disasters
Protecting yourself from financial disasters means: avoiding debts, credit or loans with high interest rates and using credit cards intelligently.

A good idea so as to not forget about retirement is making your savings like one of your purchases and subtracting them from your income, which will make it necessary to decrease your spending and increase your income. Some advice? Making saving a habit.
