Do you know how much your politicians earn?

05/11/2014 | Europa Press – Europa Press English

Every Member of the European Parliament (MEP) earns 8,200 euros a month before taxes, which is 1,505€ more than what the President of Spain Mariano Rajoy makes, 2,200€ more than a minister and 5,200€ more than a simple representative in the district of Madrid, according to the data from the Euro-Parliament and Spanish Courts that were consulted.

The European Parliament set a monthly wage of 8,020.53€ for 2014, which after applying the European tax and an amount for accident insurance, ends up at a net salary of 6,250.37 euros.

Compared to the 8,020€ monthly wage of a MEP, the President of the Spanish Government, Mariano Rajoy, receives a monthly gross salary of 6,515.42€, which is 1,505€ less than every representative in the Euro-Parliament, according to the data from the State´s General Budget Law for 2014.

In the case of ministers, every department head receives 5,748.49€ gross a month, in other words, 2,272€ less than a MEP.

Comparing the Spanish representatives and those from the Euro-Parliament shows an even bigger economic difference, according to the data from the official web page of Congress.

Spanish members of parliament in the lower house receive an “identical constitutional wage” of 2,813€ gross a month, although this amount does not include compensation or stipends for transport and living expenses, which would be included in the gross salary of a simple representative in the district of Madrid that doesn´t hold any office in the House and doesn´t include another 873€ a month in compensation for expenditures.

This minimum monthly gross wage of 2,813€ for each representative is 5,207€ euros less the before-tax salary of a European MP.

The European Parliament explains on its official web page that MEPs don´t choose their own wages and their salary is set at 38.5% of the base wage of a judge for the Court of Justice of the European Communities.

Daily expenses, separately
Allowances are also added to the salary received by the MEP to cover costs they take on “while carrying out their functions”, which in 2014 total 4,299€ a month for things like “office management”, “telephone”, sending post, purchasing and maintaining computer equipment, among other items.

The Euro-Parliament claims that these allowances “are cut in half” if the MPs “do not attend half of the plenary sessions in one parliamentary year (September through August), with a justified excuse”.

Furthermore, the newly elected MEPs have their travel costs paid and receive daily allowances of 304€ for their stay to pay living expenses and other costs when they go to the parliamentary sessions in Brussels and Strasbourg. If they miss more than half of the nominal voting sessions, the allowance is reduced in half.
