A Woman in the Reserve

The world
of finance has traditionally been a world for men,
one in which the door has timidly begun to open for women with great difficulty. From being on reserve, a woman, Janet Yellen, has now gone to the front of the Reserve; that is to say the Federal Reserve, the central bank of the United States.

With this woman, married to Economics Nobel Prize winner George Akerloff and who has a progressive profile compared to the conservative nature of her predecessors, it seems like a new sensitivity to the economy could also arise.

The change could be substantial and has started to be noticed in the language she utilizes judging from some of her first statements: Employment needs to be the priority and mission of the institution I preside over, and not installing itself on Wall Street but actually serving citizens – she has said.

If Greenspan´s motto was to let the markets work by themselves and Bernanke´s job was to avoid a catastrophe, now it seems like things are controlled by the Yale school of thought, which is influenced by figures like Stiglitz or Tobin, that advocates that the mission of the government is not to wait around with their arms crossed for problems like inequality and unemployment to fix themselves or to indifferently contemplate the consequences of some financial markets whose ways of working have already been seen to be far from perfect.

Now then, the good news is that for the first time a woman who´s worried about the damage the crisis has inflicted on the jobless has arrived at the top of the financial system; someone who doesn´t see statistics but sees human problems on unemployment lists and who seems willing to promote employment along with price stability and a safer financial system.

It goes without saying that she will take on problems as relevant as the effects of drawing down the economic stimulus at this stage of the crisis. But for the moment, welcome and let´s hope the expectations are confirmed.
